Intensive Introduction to Machine Knitting.

This course is aimed at new and aspiring designers wanting to include knitwear in their collections. It will introduce you to the many possibilities capable on the basic domestic knitting machine. The week has a strong design led focus on all of the techniques covered.

Working on domestic single bed knitting machines, students will learn how to knit and identify knit stitches that are used in contemporary knitwear collections.

The week will include;

Identifying yarn type and correct weight for the machine you are working with.
Casting on and off techniques.
Pattern Exploration – learning to knit jacquard, tuck, and knit weaving.
Trims and edges used for garment production.
An introduction into Holding cam and 3D stitches.
A review of current knitwear designers and techniques used in their collections.


Four Week Intensive Contemporary Machine Knitting Techniques. 

The course will run five days a week,10:00 – 16:00, with an hour for lunch.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners or those with some prior knowledge of machine knitting. The structure of the course is underpinned with an emphasis on design and awareness of current trends within knitwear practice. Technical demonstrations are given throughout each week with opportunities for one to one tuition where needed. All yarn is included.

Week One - Foundation

Casting on and off, including interesting trims and hems.
Fully fashioning and shaping techniques.
Manipulating your knit with washing, felting, cutting and distressing.


Week Two - Patterning.

This week we will introduce you to the many creative ways in which you can utilise pattern and texture on the knitting machine.There will be continued emphasis on contemporary design to inspire your techniques and knit swatches.

The techniques explored will include;

Jacquard.
Tuck stitch.
Slip stitch.
Plating.
Weaving.

Week Three - Three Dimensional Structures.

This weeks lessons will be focused towards three dimensional knit structures. You will develop techniques to create volume and form within your knit fabrics. You will utilise the many technical capabilities enabled by using the holding cams.

The week will include;

Learning how to create volume with the holding cams.
Applying the technique to the body form.
Experimentation with yarn, colour and structure.
Week Four - Further Development

Now you have gained confidence with your knitting skills we will develop them within garment construction. Students have the choice of designing their own garment or knitting from a choice of ready to follow patterns. This will help to focus your attention on the placement of pattern, texture or striping.

The week will include;

Learning how to fit and measure for your garment.
Calculating a tension swatch accurately.
Casting on techniques.
Casting off techniques.
Neckline possibilities.
Trim and edge variations.
Pocket ideas.
Buttonhole techniques.


Saturday Morning Coffee & Knitting.

10:00 - 13:00, Book 4 get one free! Tea, coffee and biscuits included.

Have you ever wanted give machine knitting a try? This course allows you to dip your toe in and get you acquainted with the basic principles of knitting on a domestic machine. Over the course of the weekend you will learn single bed techniques which will include;

Casting on and off
Knitting stockinette stitch
Changing colours
Identifying the correct yarns to use
How to read machine knit patterns
Increasing and decreasing
Help with knitting your first garment


A Weekend Taster in Machine Knitting. 

Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 – 16:00, tea and coffee provided but please bring your own lunch.

Have you ever wanted give machine knitting a try? This course allows you to dip your toe in and get you acquainted with the basic principles of knitting on a domestic machine. Over the course of the weekend you will learn single bed techniques which will include;

Casting on and off successfully.
Knit stockinette stitch.
Change colours and stripe.
Utilise the jacquard patterning facility.
Knit your own scarf design or follow a ready made pattern.


 Weekend Ribber Bed Workshop.

Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 – 16:00, tea and coffee provided but please bring your own lunch.

This course is designed for those with some previous single bed experience. The weekend aims to introduce you to working with the ribber attachment. There will be instruction in how to attach your ribber to the single bed followed by learning how to;

Cast on and off.
Investigating the most commonly used rib structures.
How to set up and knit a 1x1, 2x1 and 2x2 rib.
The principles of racking.
Plating.
Using ripples for texture.
Experiment with drop stitch.
1/2 Milano and Milano stitch explained.
½ cardigan and cardigan stitch explained.
Transferring knit from rib to single bed.
